Some of the pictures and stories shown on the following pages may be disturbing. In many of these cases, the stories are tragic. People have been seriously injured and in some instances, killed. Those involved frequently have suffered very significant, sometimes permanent injuries. The patients, their families, and their friends have all suffered
as a result of these events.

We often receive calls from patients or their families asking us about what happened during an incident. The following photos and stories are provided, similar to a newspaper account, for educational and informational purposes. It is our hope that through education, tragic incidents such as these can be prevented.

Every Tri Towns member that responded to these calls send their thoughts and condolences
to everyone touched by these incidents.

House Fire in Bloomington

On Tuesday December 7th 2010 at 1215 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50), Bloomington Fire Company (station 36), Potomac Fire Company (station 22), Barton Fire Company (station 19), Tri-Towns Fire Company (station 24) for the House Fire on North Branch Avenue in Bloomington, Md. At 1217 hours Ambulance 352 and Paramedic 357 responded both with a crew of 2, Command 36 advised all incoming units to stage in the area of station 36, As the fire was out at the time of units arriving on-scene. At 1227 hours command 36 advised communications that all units could go in-service when ready. All units returned in-service within 30 minutes of the call.

Motor Vehicle involving Tri-Towns Fire

On Sunday December 5, 2010 at 1828 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50), Potomac Fire Company (station 22), Tri-Towns Fire Company (station 24) for a Residental CO Detector on Spruce Street in Westernport. At 1830 hours Ambulance 352 responded with a crew of three while responding communications advised that there was a total of 3 to 5 patients that were in the residence feeling ill. At that time Deputy Chief Williams requested the location of Ambulance 350 which was returning from another call, communications advised they were in the midland area and would start that way. Also an ambulance from McCoole Fire Company (station 23) was requested due to the number of patients at the location. When Engine 221 arrived on scene they advised the EMS crew that all the patients had left the scene by pov. Allegany County Commucations then advised Ambulance 352 they need to start to the intersection of Route 135 and Route 36 a for motor vehicle collision involving Tri-Towns Fire Company. While responding to the call on Spruce Street Engine 24-11 was passing through the intersection of Route 135 and Route 36 when it was involved in the motor vehicle collision. Deputy Chief 50 who was OIC on ambulance 352 advised Allegany County Communications to have Ambulance 350 and Ambulance 323 start towards the accident scene since there were no patients on the Spruce Street call. Once Ambulance 352 arrived on-scene at 1849 hours Deputy Chief 50 took EMS command also finding that the driver of the car was out walking around and all members of Engine 24-11 were out standing next to it. At that time Assistant Chief Connor arrived on the scene and started assiting with the patients, it was found there were a total of nine to ten patients on the scene turning this incident into an MCI Accident scene. At 1856 hours Deputy Chief 50 requested three more ambulances to be alerted to the accident scene. Allegany County Communications alerted Georges Creek Ambulance (station 55) and Keyser EMS (station 57) to respond an ambulance to the MCI scene. Due to Tri Towns EMS having a third ambulance crew on the scene of the accident, a driver had cleared the scene and went to the station to respond Ambulance 351 to the scene making the third ambulance needed. Ambulance 352 loaded one priority 2 patient and transported to RMC- trauma center priority 2, Ambulance 350 transported four Priority 3 patients to Potomac Valley Hospital from Engine 24-11 to be checked out per Chief 24, Ambulance 351 transported one Priority 2 and one Priority three Patient to RMC-trauma center, Ambulance 323 transported one Priority 3 patient to RMC-trauma center, Ambulance 386 transported one Priority 2 patient to RMC-trauma center. Due to the number of ambulances taken out of the area with transporting patients to the local hospitals BLS 57-70 returned to station tocover the area until an ambulance returned back in the area. Engine Tanker 19 was alerted to fill the assignment on the Spruce Street call due to Engine 24-11 being in the Accident but once there was nothing found Spruce Street Command had placed Engine Tanker 19 in-service. Allegany County Communications alerted Frostburg Area Ambulance (station 53) to transfer to Georges Creek Ambulance station for the ambulance stand-by to cover the Georges Creek and Westernport area, while they were enroute to station 55 communications had them start towards Westernport for a patient with breathing problems on Main Street they obtained one signed patient refusal and returned to station 55 for the stand-by. All units returned in-service four hours later.

Motor Vehicle with Entrapment

On Sunday December 5th 2010 at 1108 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns Ambulance for the Mutal-Aid on the Auto Accident with Entrapment on Swanton Road and Bittinger Road in Garrett County, Maryland. The call was a Mutal Aid to the following companies Deer Park Fire Company (station 20), Northern Ambulance (9), Southern Ambulance (2). At 1109 hours Ambulance 350 responded with a crew of 2. Due to the weather conditions the response times of units arriving on the scene were delayed. Upon Ambulance 350 arrived on the scene Engine Rescue 20 of Deer Park Fire Company had already extricated the patient from the car and were awaiting an ambulance to arrive on the scene for transport to the hospital. Crews on-scene packaged the patient with Ambulance 350 transporting them Priority 2 to Garrett County Hospital. Other EMS units on scene obtained two other signed refusals, all units returned in service with in a hour and a half of the call.

Three Alarm Commercial with Entrapment

On Friday December 3, 2010 at 0614 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) on the Third Alarm Commerical Business Fire with Entrapment on East Main Street in Frostburg per the request of the Frostburg Ambulance Service. At 0617 hours Ambulance 352 responded with a crew of 3 with Deputy Chief Williams as OIC. While enroute Communications advised Ambulance 352 to set-up rehab with the other EMS units on the scene in the area of City Hall the where command is set-up. The call first came out at about 0421 hours when Chief 16 arrived on-scene he advised of a fully involved apartment fire with entrapment on the second floor, due to heavy fire crews were unable to make it to the two young FSU students that were entrapped in the fire they were unable to get out and have perished. The call brought numerous fire companies from Allegany, Mineral, and Garrett Counties to the scene. There were four other injuries on the scene of the fire that EMS units on the scene had transported to Western Maryland Medical Center (RMC) none of the injuries are life-threatening. The fire is under investgation by the Maryland State Fire Marshall Office. All units where on the scene for 7 1/2hours before returning in-service.

MVA 40 Feet over the Embankment

Another alert on Thursday December 2, 2010 at 1329 hours came when Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50), Potomac Fire Company (station 22), Luke Fire Company (station 21) to assist the Tri-Towns Fire Company (station 24), Elk Garden Fire Company (station 140), Elk Garden Ambulance (station 4) on Rescue Locals 24-8 and 144 for the Auto Accident with Entrapment car reported 40 feet over the hill on Route 46 in Beryl behind the New Page Paper Mill. Both Rescue Locals were alerted as this area is a Gray Area between both departments first due. At 1330 hours Ambulance 352 and Medic 357 both responded with a crew of three from Potomac Valley Hospital as well as Ambulance 350 responding from the station with a crew of two. Brush 24 was the first to arrive on-scene and advise the car was 40 feet down over the hill with confirmed entrapment , at that time medic 357 requested Trooper 5 put in the air. At 1340 hours Allegany County Communications alerted the Bloomington Fire Company (station 36) to set up a Landing Zone at Bloomington School, also at 1340 hours Deputy Chief 50 Requested Mineral County to alert New Creek (station 38) for an ambulance and crew to stand-by at station 50. Members from Tri-Towns EMS and Tri-Towns Fire Company removed the patient from the car and packaged onto the backboard while the crew from Squad 22 was bringing the strokes basket down the hill to place the patient into for patient removal up the hill safely. Members from Rescue Engine 140 also assited with bringing the patient up the hill. Once crews had the patient up the hill and into Medic 352 the patient was then transported to the Landing Zone where she was flown to RMC Trauma Center Priority 2 by Trooper 5. All units returned in service with-in two and half hours of call.

Unresponsive in Keyser

Again on Thursday December 2, 2010 at 1246 hours while Medic 352 was still at Potomac Valley Hospital, Mineral County Communications alerted Keyser EMS (station 57) for Medic Local 57-4 at the Mineral County Vo-Tech Center for an Unconcious Unresponsive female patient. Units were further advised the patient was a 16 year old and was breathing. Medic 352 advised Mineral County Communications they were at Potomac Valley Hospital and could start that way. Mineral County Communications Medic 352 it was thier descretion, at 1247 hours Medic 352 responded with a crew of 6. At 1249 hours Medic 352 arrived on-scene prior to arrival Medic 26 (Chief 38) had arrived on the scene as well, Company 57 was unable to get a crew for the ambulance and Medic 352 handled the call and transported the patient Priority 2 to Potomac Valley Hospital.

Full Arrest

On Thursday December 2, 2010 at 1124 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) and Potomac Fire Company for a Full Arrest patient on Washington Street next to M&T Bank. At 1126 hours Medic 352 and Ambulance 350 responded both with a crew of three. Chief 50 and EMT Fink were the first to arrive on the scene and begin CPR. Crews remained on the scene for about ten minutes performing CPR to the patient before loading into Medic 352 for Transport to Potomac Valley Hospital Priority 1. Crews quickly placed the unit back in-service and handled two more calls from Potomac Valley Hospital.

Utility Pole Fire

On Wednesday December 1, 2010 at 1935 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) and Potomac Fire Company (station 22) to assist the Tri-Towns Fire Company (station 24) on a Local Alarm 24-3 for a utility pole fire at the corner of Oak Street and West Hampshire Street. At 1942 hours Ambulance 352 responded with a crew of four while responding Command 24 advised the Ambulance as soon as possible due to a resdient at the lower end of West Hampshire Street on home oxygen with no power. The resident was not getting any oxygen and was having trouble breathing. Command 24 advised the Ambulance to stage in the middle part of West Hampshire Street with Brush 24 and Piedmont Police Department then to send the crew down to the patient house on the lower end of West Hampshire Street. Crews from the Ambulance supplied the patient with portable oxygen until Allegany Power was able to get the power back on to the residence. Ambulance 352 obtained one signed refusal from patient then remained on scene for about an hour until released by command 24. All units were on-scene for a 1 hour time period before being released after Allegany Power arrived on-scene.

Full Arrest in Keyser

On Wednesday December 1, 2010 at 0555 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) for a Medic Assist to New Creek Volunteer Fire Department (station 38) for a full arrest call on medic local 57-4 in Keyser, WV Keyser EMS (station 57) was unable to get out on this call. The Full Arrest medic assist to New Creek Ambulance took place at 500 Carskadon Lane. At 0556 hours Paramedic 357 responded with a crew of 2 with Paramedic Biggs on board unit. Once units arrived on-scene shortly behind BLS 38-70 crews began patient care and CPR to the patient, Medic 11 from station 38 was also on-scene with units. Crews quickly loaded the patient into the back of Paramedic 38-70 and transported to Potomac Valley Hospital Priority 1. All other units were left at the scene with all members transporting on 38-70. All units returned in-service within three hours of the call.

AFA in Piedmont

On Thursday November 25,2010 at 1338 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50), Potomac Fire Company (station 22), Bloomington Fire Company (station 36), Barton Fire Company (station 19) and Frostburg Fire Company (station 16) to assist the Tri-Towns Fire Company (station 24) for Commercial Box 24-1 at Jones Street in Piedmont for the Automatic Fire Alarm with reported Smoke in the Building. At 1540 hours Medic 351 responded with a crew of 4 with Assistant Chief Connor as OIC, Command 24 advised Tri Towns EMS units to stage at the corner of Third Street and Lyons Street. Mineral County Communications had also advised Tri Towns EMS units to use caution due to a fight involved with this call as well. All crews remained on scene for about a half hour while the alarm was reset and the building was vented then all units returned in-service when ready.

Single Vehicle MVA

On Saturday November 20th 2010 at 1617 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50), Potomac Fire Company (station 22), Tri-Towns Fire Company (station 24) and Barton Fire Company (station 19) for an Auto Accident on Greene Street in Westernport a vehicle reported into a telephone pole. At 1619 hours Ambulance 350 responded with a crew of 3 and Deputy Chief Williams as OIC. Ambulance 350 was the first unit to arrive on the scene to find a car head-on into the telephone pole with all subjects out of the vehicle sitting along the roadway. The driver of the car advised that no one was injuried and did not need to go to the hospital. There was heavy damage to both the car and the telephone pole. Ambulance 350 obtained one signed patient refusal from the driver. 350 remained on scene until the mother of the granddaugther arrived on the scene to have her sign the refusal since she was under the age of 18. Engine Rescue 19 was alerted on the call due to Squad 22 being out of service but with no entrapment Engine Rescue 19 was placed in-service at Philos Ave and Greene Street. All units returned in-service within 45 minutes of the call.

Unconcious Unresponsive Patient

On Friday November 19, 2010 at 0051 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) and Potomac Fire Company (station 22) for an unconscious unresponsive possibly not breathing 16 year old male patient on Greene Street in Westernport. At 0052 hours Ambulance 351 and BLS Response 357 responded with a total of nine members and Deputy Chief Williams as OIC. Once crews arrived at the location they found the patient unconscious unresponsive and barely breathing. At 0055 hours Ambulance 351 requested a medic from Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) and New Creek Fire Company (station 38). After requesting the medic crews quickly loaded the patient onto the cot and into ambulance 351 for transport Priority 1 to Potomac Valley Hospital. Ambulance 351 met ALS Response 38 on the Maryland side of the Keyser Bridge, where Medic Biggs was able to start ALS and bring the patient back making him stable by the time of arrival at Potomac Valley Hospital. All units returned in-service within two hours of the call.

A special thanks goes out to all members from all departments that was invovled in this call and too the crew that transported patient to the hospital.

Tri Towns runs the Full Arrest

On Monday November 8th 2010 at 2124 hours Allegany County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) and Potomac Fire Company (station 22) for a Full Arrest on Church Street in Westernport. At 2126 hours Ambulance 351 and BLS Response 357 both responded with a total of 10 members, while responding BLS Response 357 requested medic units to be alerted from Station 50 (Tri-Towns EMS) Station 23 (McCoole Fire and EMS) Station 38 (New Creek Fire and EMS). Once units arrived on the scene station 50 had three of medics arrive on the scene placing all other companies or responding medic units in service. Crews began patient care and CPR to the male patient within 10 minutes of giving good patient care and successful CPR crews got a pulse and heart rate back in the patient. At 2140 hours Chief 50 requested Trooper 5 to be put in the air and Lonaconing Fire Company (station 20) to be alerted to set up a Landing Zone at Westmar Middle School in Lonaconing, Maryland. Crews on the scene were able to get the patient stable enough to be air-lifted to Western Maryland Hospital Priority 1 by Trooper 5. All units returned in-service within a hour and a half of this Incident.

A Special Thanks goes out to everyone that was apart of this call, it shows what amazing things can be done when everyone comes together as one when someone within our First Due Area is in need of our help. So again thanks to everyone that was a part of this whole Incident.

Mutual Medic Assist

On Monday November 1st 2010 at 1020 hours Allegeny County Communications alerted Tri-Towns EMS (station 50) for a medic assist to New Creek Ambulance (station 38) that was handling a call for Elk Garden Ambulance (station 4) on Walnut Street for a Patient with Chest Pains. Also on the scene was first responders from Elk Garden Fire Company (station 140). At 1021 hours Paramedic 357 responded with a crew of two with paramedic Biggs on-board the unit. Paramedic 357 responded from the Backbone Mountain area while returning from another call on Walnut Bottom Road in Bloomington, Md. Paramedic 357 met all units on scene in the Elk Garden area, paramedic Biggs boarded BLS 38-71 and transported to Potomac Valley Hospital Priority. 2. Paramedic 357 was down-graded to a BLS unit and followed Paramedic 38-71 to Potomac Valley Hospital to pick up Paramedic Biggs.

Today we operate out of a much newer and larger station located 1 mile east of the old Station on Route 50
